Communiqué

The Libyan people deserve more respect

The sights that we have seen in recent days in Libya show a government which has been in power for 42 years, assassinating with impunity the African citizens who have peacefully gone out onto the streets, asking for democracy, freedom and justice, full of the indignation of international and Africa opinion, who cannot understand how this has become so extreme, as a result of the dictatorial rule of the Arab Colonel Mouhamar El Khadafi. This man has not been capable of responding in a civilized manner, but has resorted to weapons against a peaceful population who are within their rights to demand democracy.

The Libyan population, with a history centuries long, deserve more respect and not to be treated like animals about to be slaughtered, just because they followed the example of the Tunisian and Egyptian peoples in demanding their rights in respect of a democratic and fair government, in this country where their rights of self expression are forbidden and only the harshly imposed regime which runs in contrary to freedom and justice, is accepted and the right to protect their own culture, that of the rights of the Imazighen, the language and ancient Libyan customs of Tamazgha.

Those of us who have been fighting for so many years in favour of democracy and freedom and against colonialism in Africa , believed in 1969 that the Libyan people had made great progress in the fight against an Imperialist monarchy. We condemned in 1985 the Imperialist aggression that saw the bombing of Tripoli where a daughter of the Libyan commander was killed. On this occasion we vigorously condemn the assassination of peaceful citizens who were exercising their rights to call for peace, justice and democracy, which had been denied them for so long, as well as the right to freedom of speech, religion, politics, ethnicity and language, in this martyred country.

We wish the Libyan people success in their fight for freedom and democracy and that they are soon able to achieve democracy and peace for their country.

Signed: Antonio Cubillo Ferreira, President of the independent Canarian National Congress

(CNC), political wing of African Liberation Movement, MPAIAC.
